The deployment of the vaccine in December 2020 marked a turning point in the COVID-19 pandemic. Speak end of May 2021, 40% of the US population was fully immunized. But as vaccination rates have lagged over the summer, new outbreaks of COVID-19 have occurred, including Delta in the summer of 2021, and now the Omicron variant, which includes the majority of cases in the USA

Researchers around the world have reported that Omicron is more transmissible than Delta, making breakthrough and repeat infections more likely. Early research suggests this strain may cause less severe disease than Delta and the original virus, however, health officials have warned that an outbreak caused by Omicron could still increase hospitalization and death rates— especially in areas where populations are less vaccinated.
