UP tops list of crimes against women, followed by Rajasthan


NCRB: Uttar Pradesh recorded 6.08 lakh crimes in total in 2021, about 7.5% less compared to 6.57 lakh crimes recorded in 2020 (the year of lockdown and Covid restrictions ), and 3.2% lower than 6.28 lakh cases recorded in 2019.

Also, if we take a look at the NCRB data for the previous years of 2019 and 2020 and compare it to 2021, there has been a drop in most heinous crime cases, including that of murder, dacoity, sexual harassment, death for dowry, acid attack.

However, rape, kidnapping and abduction cases recorded a slight increase in 2021 compared to 2020; however, the same two crimes recorded a low from 2019.

The state ranked 28th in crimes against children with 16,838 cases and 36th in kidnapping for ransom with 50 cases.

With 56,083 cases, Uttar Pradesh tops the list of crimes against women, followed by Rajasthan (40,738) and Maharashtra (39,526).

According to NCRB data, Nagaland reported the lowest number of crimes against women with a rate of 5.5% in 2021. The northeastern state also recorded the lowest number of actual cases (54) Last year.

No less than 31,677 cases of rape were recorded in 2021 against 28,046 cases in 2020 in the country.

A total of 1,49,404 cases of crimes against children were recorded in 2021, an increase of 16.2% compared to 2020.

The NCRB was established in January 1986 with the aim of creating a body to compile and maintain archives of crime data. It operates under the aegis of the Union Home Ministry. Besides publishing annual reports, its functions include “the collection, coordination and exchange of information on interstate and international criminals to the respective states”.

The NCRB also acts as a “national warehouse” for fingerprint records of Indian and foreign criminals, and assists in locating interstate criminals through fingerprint searches.

The NCRB report contains data received from 36 states and union territories across the country. Similar data is provided for 53 metropolitan cities, or those with a population of more than 10 lakh according to the 2011 census, by the respective state level crime records bureaus.
