Of all the most serious crimes identified by the FBI – I knowwn as Part I offenses – theft is by far the most common. In the United States, 4.6 million cases of theft were reported in 2020, representing almost 60% of all Part I offenses, which also include murder, assault, robbery, rape , vehicle theft and burglary.
Theft is a crime classification that includes all non-violent thefts, with the with the exception of motor vehicle theft. Common examples of theft include purse theft, pick-pocketing, shoplifting, and bicycle theft. According to the most recent available estimates from the FBI, larceny leads to an estimated $ 5.9 billion losses to victims every year.
Although theft is relatively common in the United States, in parts of the country Americans are at particularly high risk of being the victim of theft.
Using data from the 2020 FBI Uniform Crime Report, 24/7 Wall St. identified cities with the highest rates of theft. Cities are ranked according to the number of reported thefts per 100,000 inhabitants. Only cities with more than 25,000 inhabitants were considered
In all of the cities on this list, theft rates are more than double the national rate of 1,398 incidents per 100,000 population. Most of the cities on this list are in the South, with six in South Carolina alone.
Theft is one of the three criminal offenses that make up the property crime rate. Due in large part to higher-than-average theft rates, in each city on this list, the overall property crime rate also far exceeds the national rate of 1,958 incidents per 100,000 population.
