With the map of Jews in Boston, the anti-Semitic threat of BDS is now clear and present

BDS Boston, a local supporter of the international campaign to “denormalize” Israel and end its existence through Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), recently shared a map linking Jewish institutions in the Massachusetts area to entities government, media and government. police and linking them to sinister activities.

The map, developed by the Mapping Project, includes tracking from the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts, teen and youth-focused organizations like the Hillel Council of New England, the Jewish Teen Foundation of Greater Boston, and even a Jewish high school, the Gann. Academy. Included in their targeting of “institutions responsible for the colonization of Palestine or other harm” are Senator Elizabeth Warren, the Boston office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University and even Harpoon Brewery. . Yet, inevitably, the list focuses on including Jewish institutions, cultural or media outlets like the Jewish Arts Collaborative and the Jewish Journal to major Jewish community organizations, like Hadassah, the Anti-Defamation League and, of Ominously, Hillel and a Jewish day school. Mapmakers call them “highly militarized forces that share resources and information to enforce the intersecting systems of white supremacy and capitalism.”

Sound familiar? It should. It invokes age-old and chilling anti-Semitic tropes straight out of “Protocols for the Elders of Zion,” a fabricated document that outlines the Jewish plan for world domination and helped inspire the brutal Russian pogroms and the Holocaust.

Today, these same conspiracy theories are experiencing a resurgence among anti-Israel activists who are increasingly bold in targeting Jewish organizations that are primarily religious or community oriented (as opposed to Israel). Nerdeen Kiswani of Within Our Lifetime claimed that Jewish community organizations “are Zionist organizations that hide behind Judaism. Thus, every organization on this list is a legitimate target. Zahra Billoo, executive director of the San Francisco chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said, “We have to pay attention to Zionist synagogues. They are your enemies. The New York group Decolonize This Place was even more explicit, posting online: “Find nearby targets, find where these Zionist fools live, and where [sic] the offices are, and act!

Is it any wonder, then, that attacks on Jews — who are already by far the most targeted American demographic for religiously-motivated hate crimes — are skyrocketing? In New York, anti-Jewish attacks increased by 409% in the one-year period from February 2021 to February 2022. No wonder then that 88% of American Jews say they are concerned about hate. Jews in the United States. , and that 39% of American Jews have changed their behavior in the past year due to anti-Semitism.

American Jews are keenly aware that there is an ongoing campaign by powerful forces, including state actors, to harm us. Notably, Iran has repeatedly targeted Jewish community organizations not associated with Israel for acts of terrorist violence, including the July 18, 1994 bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Argentina. , which killed 85 people. France, with the largest Jewish community in Europe, has seen a series of attacks on Jewish individuals and institutions, including a kosher grocery store in Paris and a Jewish school in Toulouse.

American Jews are keenly aware that there is an ongoing campaign by powerful forces, including state actors, to harm us.

We can no longer bury our heads in the sand. The same people who express the need to “target” their “enemies” at Jewish institutions are also mapping where individual Jews live and work. Certainly, they will not stop at Massachusetts, but will continue to paint a national and world map of the Jewish community. The goal is not simply to delegitimize Israel, but to make American Jewry a pariah. More worryingly, the intelligence represented by the map can be immediately weaponized by deranged or more sophisticated individuals, including state actors bent on harming the Jewish community.

Make no mistake: what the Mapping Project has constructed is a plan for a pogrom. It’s code red – incitement to evil and intelligence are widely publicized. We need the immediate help of the US government and all sectors of society to prevent a dramatic increase in anti-Jewish violence. Moreover, the world must recognize BDS for what it is: a front for the oldest hatred, anti-Semitism, in its purest and most virulent form. How cruel and telling that those who claim anti-Zionism are not anti-Semitic cards not only pro-Israel, but also New England Jewish institutions.
